Packaging

What makes packaging feel considered?

Considered packaging is rarely about expensive finishes. It’s about fit, proportion, restraint and the moment of opening.

Corrugated kraft packaging with a fitted insert and a small printed label.

People can tell when packaging has been thought about, even if they can’t say why. It isn’t usually the most expensive box in the room. It is the one where everything fits.

Fit

A product that rattles in an oversized box feels cheap, whatever the box is made of. Considered packaging is sized to its contents. Inserts hold things in place; lids close with a little resistance; nothing is wasted.

Proportion

The relationship between a box’s height, width and depth affects how it is perceived before anyone touches it. Small changes in proportion can move a box from ordinary to elegant without adding cost.

Restraint

Considered packaging usually uses fewer things, better. One colour instead of four. One finish instead of three. A single mark placed with care rather than a logo repeated on every face.

The moment of opening

Every box has a sequence: how it is held, where the hand goes first, what is seen when the lid lifts. Designing that sequence — a tab that is easy to find, a reveal that feels intentional — is what people remember.

Material honesty

Materials that are what they appear to be tend to feel considered. Kraft that looks like kraft, board that is coloured through rather than printed to look solid, paper with a texture you can feel.

Our test

We put prototypes into people’s hands without explanation and watch what they do. If they hesitate, something isn’t working. If they slow down and look, it is.
